Aaron Burr: Conspiracy to Treason. By Buckner F.
Melton, Jr. (New York: John Wiley & Sons, 2002. 278 pp. Illustrations,
map, notes, index. $27.95.)

Aaron Burr continues to fascinate
us. There is no doubt that he killed Alexander Hamilton, but was
he ready to betray his country in order to build a personal empire
in the American Southwest? Buckner F. Melton, Jr. is the latest
of a dozen or so writers who have attempted to sort out this complex
story. It is a story that defies revision, and the best account
is still Thomas Perkins Abernethy's The Burr Conspiracy (New
York, 1954). |
