With this excellent study
of Alaska from pre-contact to the present, University of Alaska
professor Stephen Haycox may well have established himself as Alaska's
premier historian. It is a reputation hard earned. Four decades
of digging out manuscript nuggets across the United States, untiring
professional involvement all over Alaska, numerous scholarly publications,
and a steady stream of newspaper and media copy that has enlightened
fellow Alaskans about their geographic immensity—such dedication
is now western history readers' good fortune.
